On 23 April 2023, the ACT Government proudly announced it would be the first jurisdiction to fund abortion. Canberran women would be able to access free medical abortion up to nine weeks and surgical abortion up to sixteen weeks.
The Government committed more than $4.6 million to taking innocent lives.
Since that day, my conservative estimate is that approximately 4,400 babies have lost their lives on the taxpayers’ dime. This is an extrapolation based on the latest reported annual abortion rate.
An official ACT Government report found that the no-cost abortion scheme provided 1,542 medical abortions and 1,414 surgical abortions between its commencement in April 2023 and June 2025, a total of 2,956 abortions.
Now, in the 2026-27 budget, we’re told that an additional $835,000 in funding will support ongoing ‘service demand’. Put simply, more babies will be lost at an additional cost.
Think about all that could be achieved with $5.435 million to support mothers in carrying their precious babies, but instead that money is invested as an incentive to “make it go away”.
The problem, of course, is that the baby is not an ‘it’ it’s a beautiful boy or girl, a life created by God, unable to fight for itself.
We need to pray, we need to speak. Let our light shine as we speak the truth in love and fight for these babies’ lives.
