While Canberrans struggle with soaring housing costs, grocery bills and power prices, the ACT Government has found another priority for taxpayer dollars.
From 1 July, it is now free to change the sex recorded on ACT birth certificates and other identity documents. Applicants can also choose from a wide range of gender descriptors, provided they meet a handful of basic requirements.
This follows years of reforms allowing people to change the sex recorded on their birth certificate without surgery or medical intervention.
The changes come as the ACT Budget commits a further $894,000 towards expanded LGBTQIA+ services and advocacy.
Taxpayers are entitled to ask whether this is really where scarce public money should be going.
Birth certificates exist to record the facts of a person’s birth. They are foundational legal documents used throughout society. Making it free to alter those records does not change a person’s biological sex, but it does further normalise an ideology that denies its significance and creates practical consequences for areas such as women’s sport, single-sex spaces and public confidence in official records.
Christians believe every person deserves dignity and respect. But taxpayers should not be expected to fund policies that undermine biological reality while families struggle to make ends meet.
ACL will continue advocating for laws that recognise biological sex and put the priorities of ordinary Canberrans first. Fundamental freedoms that are essential in a democratic society.
